Prospective volunteers can Google their city, state, or county health department's website and check its social-media accounts for updates. One 38-year-old woman in Connecticut spotted a link on her healthcare provider's website buried in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Others heard about opportunities through word of mouth. Some volunteers hunted down the information on their county health departments' websites. There's no uniform or national system for signing up to volunteer, and finding the right website for your area will take some sleuthing. Insider spoke with five volunteers from four states about how they found their appointments, the tasks they had to perform, and when in the process they received their shot. Jenny Howard, 34, took this photo after volunteering at a vaccination site in North Carolina. In some places, vaccinations are slow and shots remain scarce, especially for communities that have been affected the most. The barriers reflect the larger vaccine rollout, which has progressed haltingly and favored those who can smoothly navigate the labyrinth of state, county, and unofficial websites to find appointments. In many places, volunteers are not guaranteed vaccines, though there's a strong chance they could get a leftover dose when not enough people show up or some miss their appointments.Īs an additional challenge, these programs may favor people who can afford to spend a whole or a half-day away from work or who have childcare, reliable access to the internet, or other privileges that could exclude some other people from participating. States and counties can face overwhelming demand from people eager to score shots by volunteering rather than waiting months before they can get a vaccine. Far from cutting the line, health officials see offering vaccines to volunteers like Howard as an effective way to entice the dozens - and sometimes hundreds - of volunteers needed each day to run vaccination sites.īut information about such programs is not always clearly or broadly communicated to citizens, occasionally by design. Howard is one of the thousands of younger and healthier people who have received their COVID-19 vaccine through volunteering at a vaccination site. "I might have teared up a little bit," Howard told Insider. This story is available exclusively to Business InsiderĪnd start reading now. Because of this, ground shaking, such as those caused by raucous fans at a music concert or football game, is amplified.Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders. According to Caplan-Auerbach, the geology of the area is a landfill, describing it as soft and soupy. Part of this seismic activity is largely influenced by the type of ground upon which Seattle rests. You can submit your own findings from the Eras Tour concerts to Caplan-Auerbach here. "So, that was fun to see, that this event was really, really quite an energetic event from a seismic perspective." "It shook the ground twice as strong as the original Beast Quake," she said. When asked how much the Swift concerts shook the ground compared to the Beast Quake of 2011, Caplan-Auerbach noted a significant difference. She looked at data from a seismometer for the two dates Swift performed at Lumen Field and discovered that the line registering seismic activity for those dates was virtually identical, which confirmed the shaking was coming from the concerts. Her guess is that this was caused by fans dancing in the crowd rather than the actual music. Looking at the data, the seismologist points out that the largest sounds are in the range of 1-3 hertz, meaning that energy was pushed into the ground at 1.03 times per second. She says that there is a chance that the ground-shaking activity from the Swifties could have been caused by the sound system, while the Beast Quake was likely caused solely by the Seahawk fans. Now, Caplan-Auerbach is quick to point out that the seismic data from the Beast Quake and Swift Quake may not be a fair comparison.
