However, the idea of serenity is expressed, and we find that through another word, peace. The word serenity does not appear in most English translations of Scripture today. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful.” ( John 14:27) Serenity sounds great, perfect even, but is serenity possible or just a figment of human imagination?Īccording to Scripture, serenity is indeed real, but biblical serenity may be a bit different than how we understand the word. ![]() Our relationships are running smoothly, along with work, and we feel an unbridled connection to God. ![]() When serenity is found in our lives, the same becomes true about us. There are no worries, no concerns, no troubles. Everything looks well, and in fact, everything is well. If serenity were illustrated through a picture you would witness a portrait of a smiling family or a landscape of undisturbed snow. A good word to describe this tranquil and ideal state of being is serenity. If only we could just get to that state of peace and satisfaction. But we always return back to a state of wanting. We labor and toil in an effort to fulfill this want. Per our human nature, there’s always a want that we wish to fulfill, much like our daily hunger and thirst. It can be hard to have serenity in this chaotic world, and it may only come in patches, but those patches of serenity get us through the hard times.Have you ever thought, “If I just had _ I would be okay”? Fill in the blank with money, a spouse, a new job, whatever. Serenity is being calm, peaceful and tranquil without terror, anger, sadness, or turmoil. The overwhelming emotion of being unconditionally loved and accepted. The feeling you get looking out over the valley from a mountain top. The feeling you get lying the in warm grass watching fluffy white clouds float by. It's a happy person that has the gift of serendipity. They take notice of the joy in the world around them. Optimists have an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident, for serendipitous moments, because they can see the good in a situation. If you notice in the definition of serendipity, it says an 'aptitude'. Serendipity is walking outside after a storm and finding a double rainbow crossing the sky. It's running into an old friend at the store that you've been thinking about recently. It is finding an extra french fry or two in your bag that fell out of the container. Serendipity is discovering a five dollar bill in your winter coat pocket when the cold season comes. Optimists can find joy in places that pessimists cannot. Serendipity lends itself more to the optimistic side of things. The pessimistic surprise is not serendipity. ![]() While there may be some truth to that, there would still be no happiness because one would never expect happiness and so never see the happiness, it becomes pushed aside. Some say that being a pessimist means you'll never be disappointed and sometimes you'll be surprised things didn't turn out terribly. ![]() If one were to be the recipient of the actions these words define, it would only work to make the person have a better life. Serenity: the state or quality of beingserene, calm, or tranquil.īoth of these words lead the imagination to a state of happiness. Serendipity: an aptitude for making desirable discoveries by accident.* The sound of them combined with their meanings brings a smile to my face. Serendipity and Serenity are two of my favorite words.

Knight feels the need to give pretexts for the flashbacks in the clumsiest ways possible, sticking Eidinger with several contrived monologues that he delivers with the salivating glee of somebody in a different show. I understand why Knight would have felt a TV adaptation needed more action, but inserting half a dozen, “Oh no, is a Nazi with no name or character about to shoot one of our heroes?” conflicts and bouncing main characters off of walls in weightless CG bombings just makes a specific story generic. A jewel collector for the Reich, von Rumpel is dying of cancer and thinks Marie and her papa know the location of one particularly significant stone that he believes offers immortality to its possessor.Ī strict adaptation of the book would have spent a long time with Marie hiding in an attic and Werner trapped in rubble - extended suspense pieces that work because of the twinkle-toed restlessness of Doerr’s storytelling, which goes from storyline to storyline and flashback to flashback with zippy chapters that are rarely more than a page or two long. Oh, and helping to make clear that Werner is a Good Nazi - most of the deaths he’s responsible for are offscreen and thoroughly sanitized - our attractive protagonists are being menaced by The Worst Nazi, Lars Eidinger’s Reinhold von Rumpel. Plus, Marie and Werner have something in common: They both grew up listening to radio broadcasts from a mysterious “professor” who, if the dialogue in the series is to be trusted, mostly gave weekly lectures explaining the title of the book and series. ![]() Sure, he’s a Nazi, but he’s always got a worse Nazi barking orders at him, so he’s redeemable. Werner is brilliant and tasked with rooting out resistance missives. One person listening is sincere young Nazi Werner (Louis Hofmann), who is in Saint-Malo monitoring radio signals for the Germans. But Papa has gone missing, Etienne is nowhere to be found and Marie is stuck sending radio transmissions out into the ether. Teenage Marie-Laure (Loberti) has been blind since childhood (Nell Sutton affectingly plays the younger Marie) and, after fleeing Paris and the Nazi occupation, Marie and her Papa ( Mark Ruffalo) have taken up residency in coastal Saint-Malo with the aforementioned traumatized agoraphobe ( Hugh Laurie). It’s a handsomely produced mess.įor at least the first hour, series writer Steven Knight ( Peaky Blinders, FX’s A Christmas Carol) maintains the book’s two parallel narratives, which go backward and forward in time culminating in the battle of Saint-Malo in August of 1944. If the light mentioned in the title refers to subtle gradations on a spectrum, the light in the limited series is like having somebody activate their iPhone flashlight app in your eyes. And almost every change makes the material louder, clumsier and less emotionally rich. But its similarity to the book dwindles with almost every passing moment to the point that, by the aforementioned third episode, almost nothing that happens on the screen has any connection to what was on the page. It’s very nicely shot and James Newton Howard’s swelling score offers no doubt on when you’re supposed to feel things. However, its overall performance is extremely poor that it badly requires to be overhauled.Venue: Toronto International Film Festival (Primetime)Ĭast: Aria Mia Loberti, Mark Ruffalo, Hugh Laurie, Louis Hofmann, Lars EidingerĬreator: Steven Knight, from the book by Anthony DoerrĪll the Light We Cannot See has good things going for it, including a radiant lead performance from newcomer Aria Mia Loberti. Uses more CPU than vMix in some of our tests. It requires a relatively powerful computer, especially for HD video streams. If you need premium support, you can purchase it for $99. The advanced version, Wirecast Pro, adds support for HDV, replay, more devices, and other features for $995.00. Wirecast Studio, the basic version of the software, costs $495.00. This is only a partial list, as Wirecast is very full-featured. Other advanced features provided by Wirecast include chroma key, playlists, Twitter feeds, support for all common encoding formats and streaming protocols, external monitor output, and recording to disc. For sports, Wirecast even features a scoreboard overlay feature to immerse the audience in the game. The encoder supports live switching, but also transitions, lower thirds, titles, picture-in-picture, and other elements that add polish and professionalism to a broadcast. The latter is done through an application called the Wirecast Cam App. For example, Wirecast allows input feeds from cameras, your desktop, video or picture files, and even attached iOS devices. One 38-year-old woman in Connecticut spotted a link on her healthcare provider's website buried in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Others heard about opportunities through word of mouth. Some volunteers hunted down the information on their county health departments' websites. There's no uniform or national system for signing up to volunteer, and finding the right website for your area will take some sleuthing. Insider spoke with five volunteers from four states about how they found their appointments, the tasks they had to perform, and when in the process they received their shot. ![]() Jenny Howard, 34, took this photo after volunteering at a vaccination site in North Carolina. In some places, vaccinations are slow and shots remain scarce, especially for communities that have been affected the most. The barriers reflect the larger vaccine rollout, which has progressed haltingly and favored those who can smoothly navigate the labyrinth of state, county, and unofficial websites to find appointments. In many places, volunteers are not guaranteed vaccines, though there's a strong chance they could get a leftover dose when not enough people show up or some miss their appointments.Īs an additional challenge, these programs may favor people who can afford to spend a whole or a half-day away from work or who have childcare, reliable access to the internet, or other privileges that could exclude some other people from participating. States and counties can face overwhelming demand from people eager to score shots by volunteering rather than waiting months before they can get a vaccine. Far from cutting the line, health officials see offering vaccines to volunteers like Howard as an effective way to entice the dozens - and sometimes hundreds - of volunteers needed each day to run vaccination sites.īut information about such programs is not always clearly or broadly communicated to citizens, occasionally by design. ![]() Howard is one of the thousands of younger and healthier people who have received their COVID-19 vaccine through volunteering at a vaccination site. Because of this, ground shaking, such as those caused by raucous fans at a music concert or football game, is amplified.Account icon An icon in the shape of a person's head and shoulders. According to Caplan-Auerbach, the geology of the area is a landfill, describing it as soft and soupy. Part of this seismic activity is largely influenced by the type of ground upon which Seattle rests. You can submit your own findings from the Eras Tour concerts to Caplan-Auerbach here. "So, that was fun to see, that this event was really, really quite an energetic event from a seismic perspective." "It shook the ground twice as strong as the original Beast Quake," she said. When asked how much the Swift concerts shook the ground compared to the Beast Quake of 2011, Caplan-Auerbach noted a significant difference. She looked at data from a seismometer for the two dates Swift performed at Lumen Field and discovered that the line registering seismic activity for those dates was virtually identical, which confirmed the shaking was coming from the concerts. Her guess is that this was caused by fans dancing in the crowd rather than the actual music. Looking at the data, the seismologist points out that the largest sounds are in the range of 1-3 hertz, meaning that energy was pushed into the ground at 1.03 times per second. She says that there is a chance that the ground-shaking activity from the Swifties could have been caused by the sound system, while the Beast Quake was likely caused solely by the Seahawk fans. Now, Caplan-Auerbach is quick to point out that the seismic data from the Beast Quake and Swift Quake may not be a fair comparison. |
